May 2007:
New web site available with data from the monitoring of the
JRC Large Photovoltaic Façade. The façade was installed
on the ELSA building in August 1994. At the time of installation it was
the largest photovoltaic installation in the world using amorphous
silicon modules. It has been operating with a few interruptions ever
since, generating a total of over 170 MWh. The external power display
has been inactive for some time, giving rise to the perception that the
system was no longer working. In fact, it has been running almost
continuously since 1994. The longest interruption has been in April and
early May 2007, when a fault in one inverter caused energy production to
stop.

Press
release: The European Solar Test Installation (ESTI) to move its
efforts towards Thin Film Technologies
The ESTI Laboratory of the European Commission's Joint Research
Centre (Institute for Environment and Sustainability, Renewable Energies
Unit) in Ispra, Italy is pleased to announce that it will concentrate
its R&D effort, including Module Qualification, on Thin- Film based
Photovoltaic Modules. It intends to take a proactive and leading role in
Thin Films - gaining more knowledge, solving problems and contributing
to make this new technology market-ready. Consequently, as from 1 March
2007, ESTI will accept only thin-film photovoltaic modules for testing,
according to IEC 61646, while assuring the completion of all on-going
accepted tests to IEC 61215.

PVGIS supports regional solar energy initiatives: Summer School
WebValley 2006 Three members of our team have been invited by
ITC-irst Trento to participate on the
Summer School WebValley 2006. The main theme of this event is development of a
prototype WebGIS infrastructure for an assessment of solar energy
resource at the building scale for the province of Trento. In a series
of interactive lectures, the group of 24 highly-enthusiastic secondary
school students was given information about the PVGIS project with focus
to development of databases and tools in the GRASS GIS software. The
PVGIS group agreed to collaborate with ITC-irst on sharing and
developing some algorithms and know-how.
